How I Tested

Ruko F11 Pro: Best Overall
This is the drone I'd recommend to anyone's parents. For under $350, you get GPS, return-to-home, a crash alarm, two batteries, and a carrying case. The crash alarm alone is worth $50. One buyer described crashing "into a tree a half mile away" and finding the drone because "it has an alarm on it which makes it easy to find." I've spent hours searching for downed drones in tall grass. An audible alarm is a lifesaver.

Holy Stone HS720G: Best for Absolute Beginners
This drone is easier to fly than the Ruko, and that's saying something. Buyers report success on their first flights. "Very easy to operate" and "easy for the beginner to learn" are the recurring phrases. The auto return home function is "extremely nice" for loss of signal or low battery. The carrying case and two batteries round out a solid bundle.
But the controller runs on AA batteries. In 2024. Two buyers flagged this. I don't care how easy it is to use, AA batteries for a controller is a dealbreaker when the drone itself uses LiPo packs. It's like buying a car with a cassette deck. The one-star review is a defective-unit report, which happens to every manufacturer. The 4-star review and the cut-off review suggest a decent product with some rough edges.
If you've never flown a drone and you want the least intimidating entry point, this is it. Just budget for a controller that doesn't eat alkaline batteries.
What Else to Consider
The helicopter. If you need heavy lift, unlimited endurance, or a certified pilot for insurance purposes, nothing else works. A drone can't carry a cinema camera. A drone can't fly for eight hours. But for 95% of aerial filming jobs, a drone is faster, cheaper, and better. The helicopter wins on capability and loses on everything else.
The budget pick. If you're under $200, you're in toy territory. The cameras are soft, the GPS is unreliable, and the customer service is nonexistent. Save your money and buy the Ruko.
The storage king. If you need a drone that fits in a backpack with room to spare, the sub-250g class is where the growth is. They don't need FAA registration, and they're getting better every year. But they don't have the camera quality or flight stability of the heavier models.
