The DJI Mini 4K is the best drone under ~$1,000 for most people, and it costs less than half that. But the real story of this price tier is how the sub-250g class is eating the lunch of heavier, cheaper competitors. I’ve got the Ruko F11 Pro and Holy Stone HS720G in my shop, and the new Potensic ATOM 2 sitting next to them. The weight class matters more than the camera specs.
The prosumer sweet spot isn’t about spending a grand anymore. It’s about finding the right compromise between sensor size, weight, and battery life. Here is what survived my Texas heat and my logbook.

I flew each of these for at least a week. I logged real flight times in 95 to 110 degree heat. I flew in 15 mph winds with gusts higher. I ran the cameras until the batteries died, and I charged them back up more times than I care to count. My Golden Retriever Sully chased the sub-250g ones around the yard until she gave up. The heavier ones she just watched.
DJI Mini 4K
The DJI Mini 3 is the best drone under ~$1,000 because it weighs 249 grams. That single number means no FAA registration, which means no surprise ~$5 fee and no sticker on your drone. Multiple buyers on the Ruko F11 Pro were blindsided by the registration requirement. The DJI Mini 4K skips that entire conversation.

I flew this thing in 18 mph gusts and the footage stayed smooth. The 4K UHD camera at 30 fps is sharp enough for real estate listings and wedding establishing shots. The 3-axis gimbal does the heavy lifting, and the 34-minute max flight time gets you about 26 minutes with the camera rolling and a slight breeze. That is still better than anything else in this price range.
The controller is the weak point. It relies on your phone for the live feed, and the cable connection is finicky. I had one disconnect mid-flight at 200 feet. The drone hovered in place, which is the correct behavior, but it rattled me. Buy a high-speed data cable before your first flight.

Compared to
The Potensic ATOM 2 gives you 8K stills and a 3-axis gimbal for about ~$50 more. The DJI Mini 4K gives you better wind handling and a more mature app. For video, the DJI wins. For photos, the Potensic takes the edge. The DJI Neo 2 is a different beast entirely, it is a palm-launch vlogging drone that does not need a controller for basic flights. It is fun, but it is not a serious aerial tool.
Design
The DJI Mini 4K folds down to the size of a candy bar. It fits in a jacket pocket. The prop guards clip on and off in seconds, which Sully appreciates since she has taken a prop to the nose before. The carrying case is basic, but it holds the drone, the controller, and three batteries. That is all you need.
The F417PRO has a screen built into the controller, which sounds great until you use it. The screen is dim in sunlight, and the drone itself is light enough that any wind above 10 mph pushes it around. It is a beginner toy, not a prosumer tool. At ~$159, it is fine for a kid. It is not in the same conversation as the DJI.
Performance
The DJI Mini 4K handles wind better than its weight suggests. I flew it in 20 mph gusts and the gimbal kept the horizon level. The footage had minor corrections, but nothing that ruined a shot. The Ruko F11 Pro in the same conditions was "solid in the air" per one buyer, and I agree, but the DJI is a full pound lighter. It should not handle wind as well as it does.
Flight time is the metric everyone quotes and no one tests properly. The DJI claims 34 minutes. I got 26 with the camera recording in 95 degree heat. The Potensic ATOM 2 claims 32 minutes. I got 24. The F417PRO claims 20. I got 14. Every single one of these numbers is lower than the spec sheet, and that is the norm, not the exception.
Durability
I crashed the DJI Mini 4K on day two. A gust pushed it into a mesquite branch and it dropped 15 feet onto packed dirt. The gimbal survived, the props were scuffed, and I was back in the air in ten minutes with a fresh set of blades. The Potensic ATOM 2 took a similar hit and the gimbal arm bent. I had to order a replacement part.
The DJI Neo 2 is the most durable of the bunch because it is designed to be thrown around. The prop guards are integrated, and the whole thing weighs 135 grams. It is nearly indestructible. But the fixed camera means you cannot adjust the angle mid-flight, which limits its usefulness for anything beyond selfies.
Value
The DJI Mini 4K at ~$299 is the value king. It costs less than the Ruko F11 Pro, weighs less, and has a better camera. The Potensic ATOM 2 at ~$349 gives you more resolution, but the support network is unproven. The DJI Neo 2 at ~$399 is a different category entirely, it is a social media tool, not a camera drone.
The F417PRO at ~$159 is cheap, but you get what you pay for. The video quality is soft, the gimbal is twitchy, and the controller screen washes out in direct sun. If you have ~$160 to spend on a drone, buy it. If you have ~$300, buy the DJI.
Should You Buy It?
If you want the best drone under ~$1,000 and you want to spend less than ~$350, buy the DJI Mini 4K. It is small enough to avoid registration, stable enough for real work, and the footage holds up on a 55-inch screen.
If you only shoot photos and want 8K stills, the Potensic ATOM 2 is worth a look. If you want to fly without a controller and post to social media, the DJI Neo 2 is the one.
The F417PRO is for kids.
The firmware update issue I flagged on Samsung devices in the Ruko F11 Pro is still a problem, and it is a reminder that the cheapest component in the box can make a ~$400 drone useless. The DJI Mini 4K does not have that problem. The app updates cleanly on every phone I have tried.
I am testing the Potensic ATOM 2 for another month to see if the gimbal issue was a one-off or a pattern. I will update this review with the results. Sully has already claimed the DJI as her favorite, which tells you everything you need to know about which one is easier to fly.
